As formal education begins, a child begins with manipulation of small muscles, tools like- crayons, pencils, scissors. Writing begins with understanding shapes, sizes, patterns and symbols. Cognitive skills, attention, memory, motivation, sequencing cultivate the academic and pedagogical culture. Social interaction, time management, language and thought stimulation develop personality and humanist and social aspects.

Pre writing and pre reading skills are a mandatory requisite in traditional academics. Just as pre writing skills are necessary for writing readiness, so are pre reading skills required for language development. These include symbol understanding, pattern recognition, letter names and phonetical awareness.

The home environment plays an equally important role in bringing about positive, developmental modifications. Parent involvement in fine and gross motor activities, experiential learning, story time, communication skills etc are a few ways to reinforce classroom teaching without the added pressure of time, peer distraction and benefit of individual attention. Learning through play activities brings about robust acquisitions in skills, knowledge and experiences.

We should rethink our approach towards early childhood education and emphasise on developmental growth. With firm foundations laid in school readiness only can we accelerate teaching and learning.

The change we expect https://www.mentorinternationalschool.com/the-change-we-expect/ Fri, 05 Jun 2020 05:52:57 +0000 https://www.mentorinternationalschool.com/?p=2178 …]]> I am so proud that I grow up in the 90s. Not only I am super proud of this golden era of Indian music but also of the schools that I came across – from a then very popular convent school to a Municipal corporation school to a Zilla Parishad school in a village. Time changed everything, but I wished it shouldn’t have changed the meaning of schools.

Then I hated my school for being too strict. Even a minute late, and the gate of our convent school would close. The parents who brought their little ones would go back disappointed with a self-promise of getting up early the next day and making it up. We – the kids – would literally have a race on the pavement with those seven to eight kilos of school bags on our backs to reach the school on time.

Whether it was Alex sir of the convent school or Jadhav sir of the Zilla Parishad school, they both believed in discipline. I don’t remember I ever had a filmy haircut, my shirts tucked out, my upper button opened. It grew so deep in me that even after going for college and university education, I was the same person.

Those were the times when the question papers were either written and then photocopied, or written on the blackboard, or typed. Computers in mainstream education were not introduced then. Every time there was an examination, there would be mistakes in the question paper, and the subject teacher would go and visit each and every class to write the correct question on the blackboard. Nobody, literally nobody, whether you are a son of a local leader or a goon, would dare to go to Father Francis, the principal of our convent school, or Mr. Gosavi, the strictest principal of the municipal corporation school to ask them to change the school’s plan, to preponed or postponed the examination, to change the timetable, or even to ask, “Why my son or daughter hasn’t got the highest marks in the class?” Not that the parents were scared, but they had complete faith in the school system. They had complete faith in Mrs. Sahastrabuddhe’s or Borde Miss’s slaps and ear pulls that we children were scared of.

The parents, whether well-educated, from the well-to-do families or uneducated ones, never ganged up to gossip against the school policies, and it does not mean that they were not aware of the tiny goof ups the schools were making, but in the end, the parents then trusted the school for their life. Some of the parents were teachers themselves in the other schools, but never doubted schools’ decisions.

I am not quite happy with the way schools are working. Earlier there were few choices, but now we have a school almost after every one or two kilometers, but changing our perception about the school after every one or two days, isn’t a good sign for the overall education system that includes schools and parents as well. No school works for not giving the best possible education to the kids, to fulfill promises given during admissions, because every school wants to stand tall in the competition.

Parents’ unrealistic expectations about the school and about the overall teaching and learning have damaged the very fabric of the bond of trust that was once between schools and parents. Globalization and high-speed internet’s easy availability made all of u superfast in finding faults, raising issues (sometimes unnecessarily) and seeking quick solutions at a snap of a finger. We, the parents, trust internet articles and reviews more than anything else. Alexa or Siri sound more informative and authentic to us that the actual teachers. As we are educated, the rise of WhatsApp forwards and Facebook memes have suddenly made us the masters in Child Psychology, Educational Philosophy and Sociology and M.B.A. in school management, that the teachers spend more than half a decade in actual learning. The era of artificial intelligence and online shopping is leading us to seeking ‘artificial solution’ and ‘after-sale customer care culture’ and we are, unintentionally, unconsciously, trying the same with our schools, and paving the land mines that would blast the very core of the education system,, that is, morals, values and respect. I have seen parents, in front of his child, criticizing the school and the teachers’ teaching method, raising his voice at the teacher, and it is enough to make the child learn ‘mistrust’, ‘disrespect’ and ‘insult’ which ones embedded within the child, would keep ticking up like a time bomb.

For me, it is alright, if a school fails to make engineers, doctors or civil servants, or a teacher commits a mistake in notebook checking or goofs up the solution of the quadratic equation, it is still acceptable, but it will never be acceptable if a school fails to make a child ‘a good human being’.

To all the parents who think that schools don’t know how to run a school, I would recommend them to be a volunteer or come to school and be or visit the school as a field visit. The teachers are working as if they are working on the war front, always on their toe tip, running infinitely like a spring coiled toy from one task to another, from one outcome to another. Because if you are a doctor, an engineer, an architect, a scientist, or even a sweeper, you have a life, but once you become a teacher, all you have is your students.

So, instead of being an educational inspector, or a critic, or a reviewer, let’s take some time, someday, to appreciate the teacher who is working before and after school hours to give you the so-called ‘after-sale service’.

By the way, last week we went to meet Alex sir, our sports teacher, who used to make us run two rounds of the school ground, and would always carry a cane to hit us on our bare legs making them go black and blue. Though we were excited to see our old teacher, we all made sure that our shirts are tucked in properly, collars are not standing, and the haircut was formal. We met him with straight spines, chins up, and hands behind our backs.

How to Prepare Your Child for School https://www.mentorinternationalschool.com/how-to-prepare-your-child-for-school/ Tue, 28 May 2019 12:55:49 +0000 https://www.mentorinternationalschool.com/?p=1747 …]]> Starting school can be a difficult time for children. Every child is hesitant to go somewhere new and see people that they never met before. Here are some helpful ways to prepare your child for his/her first day of school:

Orientation Session:

Find out when school runs an orientation session and make the time to attend. This allows staffs to get to know your child and your child to meet other children who will be starting school at the same time. Find out basic rules such as where children are allowed to play as well as routines and expectation from school staff – for example, what day does sports uniform need to be worn or library bag need to be taken to school. This will enable you and your child to be prepared for what happens at school.

Establish a Routine:

Starting school does change their schedule. Let your child know what time school starts and ends each day so that they know what to anticipate. Set up the routine you will be keeping to during the school week. Get your child used to going to bed early and waking up earlier. Talk about when they should be doing their homework and if there will be any restriction on TV time in the evenings. Try to start following this routine about 1 month before school begins.

Talk about school:

Spend some time together talking about what a day in school will be like. Encourage your child to share any concerns that they might have and address them together. This will give you an insight into whether your child is excited or anxious about school. If they are anxious, tell them how going to school is fun and that it is perfectly normal to feel jittery. Also, reassure them that if any problem arises at school, you will always be there to resolve them. This assurance will better prepare your child for school.

Talk about Making New friends:

Going to a new school often means saying goodbye to old friends and making new ones. Talk to your child about what can do to make a new friend. Reassure them that they will still be able to see their pre-school friends. Set up some play dates with their pre-school classmates within the first 2 months of primary school so that your child can continue to maintain these friendships.

If you’re new to the school or you have a tendency to be shy and introverted, making new friends at school might seem like a challenge. Luckily, you can overcome that challenge by looking for people with the same interests as you and by being friendly when you meet new people. Also, participate in extracurricular clubs and events whenever you get the chance since that will help you meet people outside of class.

Teach them to Take Care of their Things:

Children will need to be able to care for their school things. Help your child practice packing and unpacking the backpack they will be using for school. Make sure that a child’s backpack can be easily recognized as theirs. Practice eating recess and lunch food out of their school lunch box which is easy as possible to open and close, letting them open any packaging that will be used for food at school.

When children complete basic self-help tasks such as zipping their coats or tying their shoes, they feel a great sense of pride. Independence builds confidence and self-esteem. In school, children will be expected to do many things on their own. To make sure your child in independent in school.

Encourage Positive or Appropriate Behavior:

Children need to be able to do what the teacher asks, follow rules, and interact appropriately with both adults and other children.

Behaviour is usually a way that children try to tell you something, so it’s important to determine what your child is trying to communicate with their behaviour. This gives you the chance to teach the child a positive behaviour, get support as early as possible. Once your child settles in, it is important to continue to support their development.

One of the most effective ways to encourage this of positive behaviour is by rewarding it. When your child behaves in a positive way, give specific praise, for example – great talking turn; show affection positive emotion, for example, big smile, hugs or high fives; or use tangible rewards including stickers, a star on a chart or a special game with Mum or Dad.

In today’s era, there is a strong need for a person knowing English, especially in India. This won’t surprise you but locals are giving respect to the people who can fluently speak English.

This does not mean that we are giving less importance to local languages like Hindi, Marathi, etc. However English is a common medium to communicate between peoples belonging from vibrant culture, distinct religions as well as different nations etc.

When it comes to primary education in India, there has been a huge discussion for a decade’s regarding the best medium for providing education. While many prefer “Hindi” or another regional medium as the best way to give education to children because of the easy understanding of the local language in a particular region.

There is also a large section of the population which thinks English is the best medium of transmission of knowledge and information. As it is accepted worldwide and also tends to develop the personality of a child.

The regional medium can be an effective way of education to some extent but the advantages of English medium school are far too many. Let us discuss some of the advantages of English medium schools:

The tiny kids time in preschool was precious and which we valued every second of it. We want to offer our students and parents the chance to celebrate the closing of their preschool years with new experiences to come.

Graduation is an exciting time for both an ending and a beginning. It preserve warm memories of the past and big dreams for the future. Holi Celebration: A Sacred Festival Of Numerous Hues https://www.mentorinternationalschool.com/holi-celebration-a-sacred-festival-of-numerous-hues-pune/ Fri, 29 Mar 2019 11:06:53 +0000 https://www.mentorinternationalschool.com/?p=1685 …]]> An assembly was arranged a day before the Holi celebration within the bounds of Mentor yard. Children awaken to this celebration which signifies the triumph of good over evil & devotion to god.

In addition to marking the arrival of spring, Holi also celebrates for fertility, colour, love & fraternity. Children have exhibited the animated short story of Bhakta Prahlad on the digital screen at the assembly hall.

History Of This Epic Holi Festival Celebration:-

According to Hindu Mythology & Folklore, it is believed that there was once a demon king by the name of Hiranyakashyapu. He who won over the entire earth & was so egoistic. He commanded everybody in his kingdom to worship only him. But to his great disappointment, his only son, Prahlad was a vehement devotee of Deity Vishnu and refused to worship his father.

The demon king struggled many years in several ways to get his son to worship him. As all his attempts failed so he ordered his servants to kill his son multiple times but Deity Vishnu rescued him every time.

Finally, Hiranyakashyapu turned to his sister Holika. God had blessed her with a boon which made her immune to fire. So her brother asked Holika to enter a fire with Prahlad in her lap & was assured about his death.

As per the bad intention, Holika sat on a pyre and persuade young Prahlad to sit in her lap. She then ordered her attendants to light the pyre. It is a legend of how the wicked mind paid the price of her cruelty with her life. The sacred fire burnt Holika to death though she was bestows with a boon as she would be untouched by fire. It is her evil desire which nullifies her long-serving boon & let her die with misery.

The story as a whole is a testament to the power of devotion over the evil represented by the demon king.

Through the story of “Bhakt Prahlad” tiny minds imbibed how the burning of bonfire indicates evil power and was torched like the devil Holika.

Insights For Kids From The Holi Celebration:-

This festival signifies the triumph of good over evil, so avoid mischiefs like throwing dirty water balloons or synthetic dyes/colours etc.

  • Organic Color:-

Our future adults also learnt how organic and natural colours made from herbs or flowers protect the environment as well as skins & eyes. Kids should learn how to refrain from rubbing their skin too roughly.

  • Save Water:-

It times of water shortage, global warming and other such environmental changes when every generation learns about how to save water.

You can use water if you are playing in the garden so that there is no wastage of water. Throwing water on strangers is a complete NO.

  • Molestation:-

Report misbehaviour instantly and fearlessly as some people used this as an alibi to force physical intimacy on others.

  • Distribute Sweets To Orphan Kids:-

Distribute sweets such as gujia or rasgulla to any old age home or orphanage & celebrate the festival of happiness with them.

  • Soil Pollution:-

Holi is imperfect without those vivacious colours, then using flower is the best option. Those flowers will decompose in the soil and helpful as fertilizer.

How People Commemorate The Festival Of Holi:-

Holi celebrations which emerge with the burning of Holika on the eve of Holi thus culminates with a lot of funfilled activity and bonhomie. People cover each other in rainbow-hued powder to commemorate the beginning of spring.

We worship deities of Radha and Krishna and smeared with colours. People sing and dance around the fire & also perform parikrama of fire. Children have their water missiles, called pichkaris to drench the person from far and escape further drenching.

After a wild and eventful day, everyone celebrates in a dignified manner by visiting friends and relatives. People exchange sweets and hug each other conveying the warm wishes for Holi.

Inference:-

The carnival is a jubilant occasion which we celebrate as festive of colour. Holi celebration is an approach of spring festival to say goodbye to winters. Now a day’s people have started using harsh colours made from chemicals that is why many folks avoid the festival.

Mentor school arranged the assembly in this sacred season of celebration to aware kids with the true spirit of festivity.
